What are biobased chemicals?
Many are confused by the terms ‘biodegradable’ and ‘biobased’. Whilst both incorporate the phrase ‘bio’, they do not mean the same thing. Biobased chemicals are building blocks made from sugars, fats and oils, lignin and proteins manufactured to replace standard biodegradable petroleum-based chemicals.
Biobased chemistry represents an historic opportunity to a create a new generation of renewable, sustainable products. Biobased chemicals are virtually the same as their petroleum-based counterparts, but are manufactured from renewable resources.
Recent advances in biotechnology are now making it possible to manufacture many traditional chemicals — and many promising new alternatives— from renewable biomass instead of petroleum.
Using biotechnology to produce chemicals from renewable resources can significantly reduce dependence on petroleum and cut greenhouse gas emissions, cut energy use and reduce negative environmental impact.
